Don’t go light on deep sea spinning rod

July 22nd, 2007

Deep sea fishing or, as many times refered as deep water fishing is one of the most popular fishing style especially in north America and Australia. What makes it so popular is the chance to really fight all kinds of big fish such as Amberjacks, Groupers, Tunas, Sailfish, Swordfish and even Sharks.

Deep sea fishing tackle is usually divided into three main categories; Trolling, Baits and Jigging. While these categories have different fishing charactericties thus different fishing tackle requirements, they have one thing in common when it comes to rod. It should be designed for long and tough big fish fighting.

Most of deep sea rods are casting rods designed for multipliers reels which, in many opinions, are stronger and tougher compare to Spinning reels. However, Multipliers are not ideal reels for every deep sea category. When it comes to jigging for example, when high gear ratio and easy handling is needed, spinning reels and of course spinning rods are better choice.

Choosing your deep sea spinning rod should be quite an easy task.

New fishing group pans Kenai River Classic (KTVA Anchorage)

July 9th, 2007

Another Kenai River Classic was completed last week but a new sportfishing group says the fundraiser is ultimately bad for the river. The Kenai Area Fisherman’s Coalition ran a half-page attack ad in the Peninsula Clarion of Kenai labeling the fishing event divisive.

Members include former state biologists who managed the river. They say paid access to policy-makers at the event co-hosted by U.S. Senator Ted Stevens helps corporations and commercial guides, not fish or local fishermen.

Dave Athons is a retired assistant area sportfish biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. He says there are a number of people who have been involved with state or federal agencies who feel there’s undue influence peddling at the event.

The group echoes other local anglers who say they’ve lost the river to outsiders. Athons says more and more locals keep away from the river during salmon season because of the swarm of about 400 commercial guides. They believe the crush of anglers outweighs habitat improvements supported by the fundraiser.

That view is challenged by Bill Popp, president of the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation and a former adviser to the Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor. Popp says the Kenai River Classic raises a lot of money for habitat protection and gives the Kenai River a national profile. Participants in the fundraiser pay 4,000 dollars to enter.

Corporate sponsors include Yamaha Marine, defense contractor Lockheed Martin and mining company Coeur. The goal each year is to raise a million dollars.
